Creating Video Content for The Goombles

March 7, 2024

Magic Media had the pleasure of providing several services for The Goombles, a confectionary-themed tower defense game. We provided several services, including full-cycle game development, marketing material, and, critically, video production services. With Igloo’s experience crafting video game trailers, we were a natural fit to lend our expert services.

We were delighted for this opportunity to craft video content for The Goombles and also to work closely with our client and develop a marketing strategy to build anticipation for its release within the community.

Scope of Services

The Magic Media team joined the project to deliver a suite of services for The Goombles project, as previously outlined. As part of this range of service offerings, we had the opportunity to develop a marketing plan and marketing assets for The Goombles. As part of this strategy, we developed several user acquisition advertisements and a game trailer. Video game trailers are a perfect way to build anticipation and showcase the game before release, so we opted to create a 45-second trailer for The Goombles.

Using our full-length 45-second trailer, we cut it into two shorter trailers to maximize the usable video content we could produce for our client. From our initial involvement to the completion of our work, our timeline was approximately one and a half months.

Creating The Goombles’ Trailer

For this project, we assembled a relatively small team to deliver the video production services our client required. Our team included a creative director, 3D animators, a layout artist, a sound designer, and more. Overall, we provided video production services for this project over a six-week period that started with initial conceptualization. We presented several creative directions to our client before settling on the final direction as seen in the trailer. Ultimately, our choice of direction was made in conjunction with our client who leaned on our experience to advise the best possible direction based on the target audience and video’s goals.

When providing our video production services, we had the distinct advantage of the full-cycle development services being well underway. This meant we could leverage existing in-game assets in collaboration with the development team and repurpose them for our game trailer to help the production process move along swiftly. In addition to the existing assets, we created some new environments that were more suitable for use in our game trailer and devised a new story to showcase the world and its characters. The user acquisition videos we created were based on entirely new concepts.

Client Collaboration and Tools

Over the six weeks of providing video production services, we communicated with our client weekly to showcase our progress and check in to address any concerns or queries. Outside of this, we used Slack daily to keep communication open and flowing and share our materials, answer questions, and provide consultation, while also using it as an opportunity to receive constructive feedback. Further to this, we engaged in meetings as we met project milestones, such as completing the storyboard earlier on in the process.

Luckily for us, the in-game assets from the game’s development that we used were created in Blender, which was advantageous as we created the game trailer in Blender as well. This helped the production process be more efficient as we didn’t have any particular considerations or adjustments to make importing assets into Blender. We created the storyboard for our video production services in Adobe Photoshop and compositing was completed using After Effects.
